Principal Water Quality Scientist in Cambridge, Brighton, Croydon, Bristol or London, United Kingdom

Job Description

The position is offered on a full-time or part-time basis, working alongside a team of friendly and dedicated professionals out of our newly refurbished offices in central Brighton, or our modern offices next to Cambridge railway station. With us you will be involved in a range of technical work including:
  • Catchment management permitting and nutrient balancing scheme design, cost benefit analysis and options appraisal;
  • Nutrient management planning;
  • Water quality modelling and analysis for river and lake waterbodies;
  • Ecological engineering, such as wetland feasibility and design;
  • Holistic water resources planning and analysis;
  • Hydro-ecology, natural capital and ecosystem services assessments;
  • Natural Flood Management scheme design and appraisal; and,
  • Stakeholder engagement and participatory catchment planning;
You will be responsible for technical leadership in this area, driving innovation and efficiencies and maintaining our reputation in the industry. We will expect you to mentor and train junior staff, to coordinate and review technical delivery and to collaborate to our financial success in these services. Mott MacDonald encourages staff to work across disciplines and to forge networks across the business so as to harness our talents and expertise for both innovation and resilience. Candidate Specification

You will be an experienced technical leader in this field and will be responsible for the technical direction and quality of a range of projects, whether applying innovative thinking to new or established schemes, or developing your own concepts from scratch. You will have demonstrable experience in this field and be active in promoting technical and people excellence. Alongside your technical role, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills in project management and business development through engaging with our water sector and regulatory framework clients.

Our minimum candidate specification is as follows:
  • Professional experience in water quality or chemistry, nature-based solutions and catchment management;
  • Numerate, with evidence of skills and interest in data analysis and modelling;
  • Ability to technically lead and mentor junior staff;
  • Confident at engaging with stakeholders;
  • Excellent communication and written skills;
  • Well organised and able to prioritise your own workload;
  • Understand the importance of prioritising health, safety and environmental issues;
  • Masters level qualifications in chemistry, catchment management, environmental engineering or a related discipline;

Job Profile

Mott MacDonald has a strong record of providing environmental, hydrological, water quality and catchment management services benefiting communities, clients and the environment. Due to continued growth across our award-winning, multi-sector and global business, we are now seeking a dedicated Senior or Principal level Water Quality Scientist to join our growing team in either Cambridge or Brighton.

You will have control of your own career path in cross-disciplinary engagement - our team delivers hydrological, catchment management, water quality and water resources appraisal and modelling services across the water and environmental sectors, and links in with the wider business across a range of national and international delivery services.

We are especially looking for someone with great team spirit to become an integral part of our group-wide Water Resources and Flooding Practice, which brings together a wealth of knowledge and experience in hydrology, hydrogeology, water quality, catchment management, climate resilience, hydraulic modelling, flood risk, computational fluid dynamics and associated disciplines. We have recently been successful on several large multi-year water quality and water resources frameworks; working within our dynamic Water Resources and Flooding Team, you will support clients on a range of high-profile projects. Specific projects that the role will contribute toward include:
  • Design and delivery of catchment nutrient balancing and permitting schemes for phosphorus-offsetting with water companies under the new flexible permitting approaches now being promoted by the Environment Agency;
  • Water quality investigations to understand the impact of wastewater assets on aquatic and coastal environments; and,
  • Feasibility and design of rural and urban nature-based solutions, such as wetlands and sustainable drainage systems, for water quality and water management.
