Senior System Engineer in IRQ-Basra, Iraq

Wood is currently looking for a Senior System Engineer to strengthen our team in Basra, Iraq.  The successful candidate will be working on a 28 days on / 28 days off rotation.

This is an office position based in Basra and will involve occasional visits to various sites across Southern Iraq.

  • Serve as the ICSS expert. Monitors the health of ICSS software and hardware, troubleshoots hardware and software issues, performs hardware replacements, performs software corrections, and schedules upgrades as needed.  Provide ICSS support to Operations and Maintenance (O&M) groups to keep systems operational.
  • Implement PCS alarm management program to prevent nuisance alarms and unmanageable alarm influx resulting from process upsets. Identify applicable critical alarms that require specific Operator action and implement Operator Guide Messages to communicate required Operator action
  • Manage development and maintenance of the Operator Training Simulator (OTS) for use in training
  • Use sound engineering practices, plant standards, and specifications to ensure that documentation for the ICSS are maintained properly. Maintains the controls systems Alarm and Trip Setpoint Lists, Control Narratives, Cause and Effects Diagrams, Logic Diagrams, and Instrument Tag List
  • Thoroughly understand the technical Management of Change (MOC) process and utilize it in support of capital projects and routine facility changes. Participate in Pre Startup Safety Reviews (PSSR).
  • Develop or modify complex control schemes and logic for routine facility changes and for capital and optimization projects based on Process Engineers objectives
  • Participate in regulatory agency audits
  • Participates actively in all phases of project execution including system definition and design, develop design basis, preliminary estimates, and schedules for project design scopes
  • Must have a good general knowledge of each engineering discipline with previous experience and competence in independently executing assigned Automation tasks

  • Internal SIS/FGS FAT Lead
  • Customer SIS/FGS FAT Lead
  • Work with multidisciplinary Client Technical team to define problems, establish work scopes, prepare task budgets and schedules, plan work, provide technical direction, and report the work status to management
  • Reinforce safety and environmental awareness through frequent job observations and by interfacing with plant personnel
  • Work with Engineering and Construction department to provide support and assure O & M interests are represented on major projects. Participates in Controls Systems factory acceptance tests (FATs) and site acceptance tests (SATs)
  • Interact with and support Commercial Operations, Regulatory Affairs, and other departments as required


Skills / Qualifications

Education and Certifications: Bachelor degree in Electrical Engineering or Chemical Engineering.  A Professional Engineers (PE) License is a plus.

Experience: Ten (10) to Fifteen (15) years hands-on experience as a Process Controls and PCS/SIS Engineer. Emerson DeltaV PCS and SIS systems experience will be an advantage. Recent experience with an operating Upstream Oil & Gas facility is preferred, however, petrochemical, NGL, cryogenic natural gas processing, or other hydrocarbon processing operating facility experience may be acceptable.

  • Organized, planning skills, able to manage multiple activities and programs in timely fashion and with a high degree of accuracy, able to meet work deadlines
  • Exceptional problem solving and analytical skills
  • Computer savvy including Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Access, Project and PowerPoint
